MEWP anti-entrapment protection should do more than sound an alarm when danger is already close.
For projects adopting the updated DEVB TC(W) No. 3/2023 contract provisions, the Smart Monitoring System for Mobile Elevating Work Platform serves as a secondary guarding device to help protect operators from entrapment risk.
It may be a built-in MEWP feature or a compatible third-party retrofit, depending on the machine model and project requirements.
A complete system should be able to:
• Detect obstacles around and above the MEWP
• Trigger a continuous warning siren of at least 70 dB and/or a flashing red light when personnel come within 500 mm—or another risk-assessed distance—of an obstacle
• Automatically stop MEWP operation at the predetermined danger distance
• Notify site supervisors and the Safety Officer immediately when a warning is triggered
• Simultaneously record the relevant MEWP status, incident details, date and time on the CMP or control platform for follow-up
Effective deployment also requires equipment records, pre-operation checks, operator and rescue-team briefing, and a site-specific rescue arrangement.
